To mark the end of Local and Community History Month – we spoke to one of our LifeTime members – Brain Mahoney – who regularly meets at the centre with old work pals from his days on the railways in Warrington.`

 Brian and his former workmates were reunited after a chance meeting at the LifeTime Centre – and went on to set up the Transport Group together.

 Now they can be seen most days at the centre – enjoying their friendships again and swapping stories of their times on the railways.

 Here 72-year-old Brian tells us about being a fireman and shares his passion for the railways.

He said: “I worked seven years on steam engines and six on the diesels. My job was to keep the train in steam and I worked alongside the driver to make sure the engines ran well.

“The freight trains did long trips to London and Carlisle but also local routes to places like Liverpool, Chester and Llandudno.

“We worked in eight-hour shifts, sometimes longer and sometimes on short shifts. It was really important to have a good relationship with the driver that you were working with – as you spent a lot of time together in a small space – you had to trust each other to do a good job. Some drivers were more difficult than others to work with.

“A fireman had the longest apprenticeship in the country at the time, I started in December, 1961 and became a passed cleaner in May, 1962.  I became a fireman in 1965, I then took my redundancy in June 1973.

“My favourite trips to work on were either the express passenger or freight train. I also really enjoyed excursion work to places like Blackpool – as we used to get six hours off before the return journey and you could have a really good time in Blackpool in six hours!

“The hardest point of working on the steam engines was when you were going uphill – but it was also an adrenaline rush – making sure your engine was running well. You needed a good steamer that produced a grey colour – not too dark and had to get up to 200/250F.

“It could also be difficult coming into a ‘dead end’. You had to make sure you ran the fire down.

“I am passionate about steam engines, it was a great time, we all had a laugh together – in fact, one of my fondest memories was when I pulled the water column down – the driver got in trouble – but it was a talking point at the time and we have all laughed about it since!

“After working on the steam engines, I went on to be a civil engineer – building motorways ironically – which altered a lot of the railway work.”

LifeTime has joined the new national Chatty Café Scheme to help combat loneliness for people in Warrington.

We have dedicated tables marked ‘This is a chatter and natter table’ set up on a Tuesday and Thursday between 10.30am and 12.30pm in the café area, where people can sit if they want to actively encourage someone to come over and talk to them. 

Now, we are also encouraging national café chains, independent coffee shops and supermarkets in the town to sign up to the scheme – and are delighted that since we have been campaigning – Asda Warrington has joined.

Andrea Rees, LifeTime Officer, said: “When you are feeling lonely, a short interaction with another human can really brighten your day. A Chatter and Natter table creates a space for people to talk; whether it’s for five minutes while you drink a brew, or an hour of good conversation.

“It is not necessarily about building friendships – just good old fashioned human interaction to combat loneliness, which just might have a big impact on someone’s day. We support older people in the community, but the chatter and natter tables are for all ages and great for intergenerational interactions.”

Britain’s biggest coffee chain Costa Coffee has also recently joined the scheme as a pilot at 25 of its outlets. A further 125 stores nationwide – mostly independent coffee shops – have also adopted the idea.

Andrea added: “This is the kind of scheme that you would expect places like LifeTime to get involved in – but it is vitally important that those unexpected places like café chains and supermarkets around the borough get on board to help support older people who may be feeling lonely or maybe even a new mum – the scheme suits all ages. Well done to Asda Warrington for signing up!”

Lifetime is part of Warrington Housing Association and the centre at The Gateway on Sankey Street, provides activities, advice and social events for people in their fifties, sixties, seventies or eighties and above.

Across Warrington they run more than 60 groups and events to get involved with every week, including a camera club, community choir, exercise classes and much more.

If you are a former carer or you  have a relative who has moved into full time care this new monthly social group may be what you’re looking for.  Join us in a warm and friendly environment for an afternoon of light conversation, friendship and support and meet new people in a similar situation….. or just come along for a chat and a cup of tea.  The LifeTime Graduates group runs on the fourth Wednesday of each month at the LifeTime hub on Sankey Street, our first one being on 23rd November, 1.30-3.30pm.  A small charge of £1.20 is requested.

Support is on hand for carers and people with dementia or memory problems at the LifeTime hub on Sankey Street.   Come along to this new monthly social group and enjoy an afternoon of activities such as card games, dominoes, adult colouring or just drop in for a chat and a cup of tea.  The group runs on the second Wednesday of each month 1.30-3.30pm, the next one being 14th December.  A small charge of £1.20 is requested,

Whether you’re new to dance or want to brush up on your moves you can join Jan on the dance floor at Hood Manor Community Centre for our fortnightly social.  Book in advance and enjoy a light lunch served at 12.30pm, beginners 1.00pm and then dance the afternoon away until 3.30pm . Members are loving this social event and it’s a great way to keep fit, check out our website for the next date.    You can also see Jan on Thursday, 11th August at our Vintage Tea Dance to be held in the Gateway and at other community venues during the week in Croft and Penketh.

It’s Dementia Awareness Week and LifeTime are supporting this important event in style. There’s music from the Monday Music Group and the dance class are gliding round the floor and there are lots of members enjoying meeting up together, all proven ways to keep your mind fit and well. Keep well in later life with LifeTime and have some fun in the process!

Following the successful launch of our monthly  ‘Hear to Meet’ group held  in LifeTime on a Tuesday morning we are pleased to announce that the group will also meet monthly on a Thursday afternoon.  This sociable group gives members with hearing loss the opportunity to support each other by meeting up over a cuppa, practice lipreading, exchange experiences and share information.  A date for your diary: Tuesday, 9th August Warrington Signing Choir will be joining us, all welcome.   For further details and meeting dates for 2016 please get in touch.

We are having a ‘fun’ coffee morning event from 10.30 am on Tuesday, 17th May to raise awareness during Dementia Awareness Week (15th-21st May 2016).  Join us and sing along to live music from members of our LifeTime music group, try your hand at our Memorabilia Quiz, Bottle and Chocolate Raffle or LifeTime Lucky Dip.   For a mid morning treat, choose from a selection of delicious pastries and hot drinks in our café area.  A dementia advisor from Alzheimer’s Society and a support worker from Warrington Carers Trust will be on hand to give information, advice and support to anybody affected by dementia.  The event ends with a showing of a recently released film starring Oscar winning actress Julianne Moore in a moving performance of a woman discovering she has early onset dementia.  For more details drop in or give us a call.   All proceeds to Alzheimer’s Society and Warrington Carers Trust.  Hope you can join us.

Trips are a great way for members to get to places they normally wouldn’t be able to go and going with a friendly group is a real bonus.   A sociably group of LifeTime friends travelled to the popular Ryecroft Hall in March and enjoyed a great day of food, music and entertainment with a St Patricks Day theme.  Those with mobility problems are well catered for, making it safe and easy for them to enjoy the day.  Members really enjoyed the food and entertainment and said that they would love to go again.

For some of us living alone can be quite a lonely life and can lead to becoming socially isolated.  At LifeTime we are here to help and support those in need of a listening ear or who find it difficult to get out of their homes.

Our friendship and support service offers a regular phone call during the day from one of our trained and friendly volunteers.

Can you spare a couple of hours a week to help provide this valuable service.  If you enjoy a chat and would like to do something worthwhile please get in touch with Val Walsh.  Training available.

The month of March will see the start of new LifeTime events at Hood Manor Community Centre.  Every Thursday afternoon members will have the opportunity to join in a range of popular activities such as tea dances, lunch clubs, film shows and Bingo.  The first of the tea dances is scheduled for Thursday 10th March at 1.30 pm – if you’ve always wanted to learn those sequence and ballroom dances then now’s your chance.  See our What’s on section for more details.

The older residents of Thelwall show us they ‘re keen to keep active and healthy.  Over 20 people entered into the spirit at our new chair based exercise class held at All Saints Church on Monday afternoon.   Julie, our instructor, says that both men and women of all abilities joined this lively and fun group in a friendly and welcoming environment.  If you’re looking for that feel good factor then this may be the class for you, for more details please call LifeTime on 01925 246824.

 

It was a full house with over 50 members showing their support for two great British favourites at our monthly fish and chip lunch, supplied by the award winning Papas.   The day ended with a game of the ever-popular Bingo.  The next lunch is scheduled for Friday 18th March 2016 so book early to avoid disappointment.

healthy homesWe are holding a series of talks around housing  for older people to inform and dispel some myths.

There will be a member of the Healthy Homes Team on hand to talk on Warrington Healthy Homes on Friday 26th February.  This is a local service benefitting anyone over 60.  The service supports people aged over 60 and helps them to stay safe and well in their homes in very practical ways.

The Healthy Homes Team visit people to assess how they can support with a range of interventions including health proofing in the home, home safety and security, benefit advice and grant eligibility and support to access a range of other services.

The team can help with:

Making the home safer, eg locks, security and improved lighting.  Repairs, grab rails and stair rails.  Heating, servicing and repairs.  Small repairs and improvements (some are free depending on eligibility and funding).  Ensuring that the home suits people’s needs eg mobility issues.  Handyman service.  Trusted contractors.  Free advice on home improvements and funding.  Benefits Advice.

Further sessions on Warrington Healthy Homes, Retirement Housing and Benefits for Older People are to follow in the coming weeks.  We hope you can join us.
